10+ Corn on the Cob Recipes

Summer is such a crazy time for our family! I'm sure you are running about 50 different directions, too. As a result, I haven't been able to blog as frequently as I had hoped. And so I've fallen on creating these round up posts, sharing the amazing recipes I've found and pinned.

We are gearing up for our annual summer camping trip and my mind has been all about putting a little pizzazz in our usually camping foods...like corn on the cob. You can find more of my favorite grilling recipes here and my camping board here.

Hope you find something to grill up! And if you have a favorite corn recipe, link it to me in the comments! I'd love to add to this list!

How to keep cats out of your flower garden

I've become a cat person. We've had our Josie for four years now. She's an older cat who adopted us.

My neighbor is really a cat person. Well, maybe even crazy cat lady. We love her though and all the treasures she brings us.

What we don't love? Her cat Pooh Bear who, after we redid our front garden, decided it was her new litter box.

Josie is allowed to lounge.

There are several home remedies for this.

I tried three. After finding something that worked, I didn't see the point in continuing research. It's sort of like finding your keys in the last place you look...because once you find them, why keep looking?

What didn't work? Citrus peals. The cat tried to eat them. Vinegar also had no impact.

I made D go to the dollar store for a box of moth balls. We tossed a few in the garden...Not near the plants, just along the brick edge and no more kitty poo! In fact, Pooh Bear used to perch on my porch and taunt Josie (she's very territorial) and Pooh Bear pretty much stays away now.

We removed the mothballs after a week and the cat still won't go near the area.

The big downside now?

The cat was eating grass and now I have large clumps of grass to try to kill without killing the rose bushes.

Update 6/30/2013: I have received several emails and comments about the toxicity of moth balls.  I know they are poisonous. Cats and dogs have such sensitive noses they will avoid the area based on the smell and will not get close enough to ingest the moth balls. I did receive one brilliant suggestion to still get the effect of the smell without danger to the animals (or even kids!) Take a small plastic soda bottle and poke several holes in it. Place the moth balls in the bottle and the bottle in the garden. All the smell and the moth balls are cat-proofed.

Others have suggested the use of many hot peppers sprinkled in the area. In any other summer, I would have jumped on this, but this year we have had an unusually high amount of rain. The peppers wouldn't have worked for the same reason my vinegar solution wasn't working: the rain would wash it all away.  Any topical powder application would have to be done after each rain.

At least the hydrangeas look good, right?

My tomatoes are also doing really well.

My hybrid is a bit out of control. And the heirlooms are finally producing!

So what was the logical thing to do?  Plant more tomatoes! I put in another 6 varieties last week. We should have tomatoes well in to the fall.

Cheaters Sopaipillas

One of my favorite places to go when I was a kid was this cheesy Mexican restaurant outside of Denver called Casa Bonita.  When we drove from Alabama to Washington state four years ago, we made sure to stop at Casa Bonita. It was something my kids had to experience.  The kids loved the cliff divers.

And, it was the first time they had real Sopaipilla. Sweet fluffy fried dough with honey and cinnamon sugar.  Definitely not the cheater variety I make.

I still don't make real sopaipillas at home. I'll leave that  to the professionals. Or those with patience.

What I do make is a cheater variety that delivers all the flavor without all the effort. It's perfect for an afternoon snack when you want something crunchy and sweet.

Cheaters Sopaipillas

flour tortillas cut in to triangles
oil for frying
cinnamon sugar
honey

In a small pan, heat oil to 350 degrees. Carefully drop tortilla triangles into oil. As soon as it puffs, and one side turns golden, flip it over and cook until golden. It will go quickly!

Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and drizzle with honey.

Kid Numbered Wall Clock

This Kid Numbered Wall Clock  has been made possible by Shutterfly and Looksi Square.

I've been wanting to do this project for months. The idea came in to my head last year and for various reasons dealing with kids and life in general, I didn't get around to it until just recently.

That's the good news.

The bad news? I did the project while D was home and he likes to take over help.  Even when he has no idea what I'm trying to accomplish  doesn't share my artistic vision, he butts in helps.

There are times when I need him...I'm short, y'all and sometimes I need a few extra inches to reach things.

That's how he got started with this. I was up on a ladder taking pictures of the kids in the shape of Roman numerals for a clock. He rolled his eyes a lot then told me to get off the ladder while he took the pictures. So instead of getting all the pictures the same direction, or a balanced back and forth of vertical vs horizontal...I got a hot mess. I had to call in my computer monkey The Boy, to Photoshop the pictures the right way before I uploaded them to Shutterfly.

The Photoshopping was interesting. We had to add fun things like missing hands...And even out backgrounds.

I can't tell you the number of times the pictures fell off the wall while we were nailing them up. And straightening them out. Soon, there will be a great tutorial of how NOT to nail your photos to the wall when making a clock. Also, make sure your clock kit contains instructions on how to put the pieces together or else you might just end up with an extra piece that you can't figure where it supposed to go.

It may be hard to believe, but the pictures are on the wall straight and level. Where I'm standing to take the picture? Not so much. The joys of an old house.

Wall color is still the same. Crazy things yellows do in the light! It's bright yellow, like in the last picture. The other pictures were taken when it was overcast.

Even though it didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, I still love having a clock on this wall.

And here's the finished look:

Looksi and Shutterfly have invited me to participate in a creative brand collaboration.  I have been provided with product compensation for this post, but all opinions are my own.
